Mature Adulthood

Some things we might observe in this stage might be ...

Physical

This stage is typified by a gradual loss of body mass, muscle strength and mobility

Emotional

This can be a challenging time for people as retirement is regarded as being the ‘end’ of their ‘productive’ lives.  This can lead to  the sense of identity being eroded, particularly as they  as they become less able and less capable of sustaining their independence.  On the other hand, more time is made available for friendships and socializing, meaning even stronger bonds with friends.

Intellectual

Memory is impaired, and cognitive processes slow down, meaning it can take longer to learn new things.

Social

As family are now independent and people have retired, this is a time where there is more time for socializing, and some feel very confident and enjoy the new found freedom.  Others may feel less confident, and may become isolated.

Cultural

Things like religion and philosophy can become increasingly important during this stage of life, and getting involved in social or cultural activities  also become more important… there is a real sense of ‘belonging’.  ’Hanging on’ to the values of their culture is important.
