Adolescence

Some things we might observe in this stage might be ...

Physical

Early adolescence … A time of rapid changes where puberty will be completed resulting in changes to the body, developing to an adult shape.  By late adolescence, everything has settled down again, and the body had taken on it’s adult form … well … for the time being !

Emotional

As with physical development, emotional development at this time is a mess of different emotions, with a desire to be more emotionally independent from his parents, but lacking the confidence to face the world alone.  A sense of identity really starts to assert itself.  Romance and intimacy start to feature, and, by late adolescence, can be all consuming.

Intellectual

As adolescents move through this stage of their lives, they become increasingly capable of abstract thinking and creative thought, and.  They start to question and challenge things.

Social

At this age, friends become increasingly important, and family may feel like a burden that has to be ‘endured’.  This is an age where real individuality starts to show socially, and interests widen to include ‘new’ social experiences.

Cultural

Because adolescents are really starting to develop a sense of self, they are also becoming more firmly associated with their culture, or sub culture. They become a ‘rgby bufter’ or a ‘cricketer’ or a ‘guitarist’ … and they gravitate towards cultural groups that shre those interests.  It can be  time of experimentation, too, with teens ‘dabbling’in other societal groups, trying to find where they ‘fit’.  This is related to that developing sense of self.
